about

The 4-track years
Until the end of 1989, Cairo recorded all his songs using a normal cassette deck. This was the usual process with REAL DEAL and also at the beginning of his solo project THE UNIMPORTANT THINGS. The reasons were simple - in the GDR there were no multitrack recording devices for "normal" people (only for a few professional or state studios, such as Amiga or GDR radio) and if there were, then they were from the West and unaffordable. Then in autumn 1989 the wall came down. Everything was suddenly different.

From 1990 until autumn 1993, Cairo now worked with a 4-track recorder - the Tascam Porta 05. A new world opened up with many more possibilities. Above all, because Cairo recorded all his songs alone, he was now able to work much more comfortably and creatively. In these almost 4 years, he recorded dozens of songs in his home studio (with his family life all around) and a handful of cassettes, which he distributed to friends and fans. For the recordings he used a Stratocaster guitar from Musima (a Fender replica from the GDR), a low budget bass guitar, a drum computer from Korg (DD 220), a Korg Poly 800 synthesiser, a vocal microphone (Tect UDM-1052) and a few effects units. Almost all the instruments were second-hand and bought for little money. But they worked and Cairo liked the sound of the eighties.

At the beginning of the 90s, however, he was almost alone in this. Crossover was all the rage, techno was booming in the cellars and grunge began its brief triumphal march. THE UNIMPORTANT THINGS were miles away from all that. No record company was interested in these noisy demos from another time. Cairo did what he always did: he simply continued to make his music. So here is a selection of examples from those years. Perhaps an adventure for your ears, but one that is well worth it. Have fun.
