THE REAL DEAL was a East-German Post-Punk-Wave-Pop-Band from Leipzig, that existed from December 1987 until early summer 1989. Kai Reininghaus and Kai Müller previously performed together in the German Rock Band “Reininghaus” (with others, including Robert Gläser – previously with L’Attentat – on bass.) By 1989 THE REAL DEAL had recorded four tapes. All of them recorded in the band’s practice room on Auenstrasse (today Hinrichsenstrasse) in a building ready to be demolished. The band performed live in clubs in Leipzig, Weimar, Magdeburg, Potsdam, Erfurt and, of course, Berlin. The most important venues were the “x-mal-music zur Zeit” (x-times-music for the times) concert at the beginning of January 1989 in the former movie theater “Gerade Philipe” in Berlin (where this recordings originates from), the Leipziger Rockfestival (Fall 1988) and also the performance at the Leipziger Musik-Frontal-Festival in February 1989. Art guru & famous gallery operator Judy Lybke (Founder of Eigen+Art-Galerie) invited the band for shows in the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Christoph Tannert, art critic from Berlin, looked forward to every new tape of the band, because he thought the “Real Deal is really good!”

The album was first released on tape in April 1989 and in September 2020 on vinyl (Truemmer-Pogo / Elbtal Records). More about the show in 1989 (link to bandpostcards): bandpostcards.de?p=657

Reininghaus left the GDR in September 1989 and self-produced numerous tapes and CDs under the name “The Unimportant Things”. In 2013 he published his memoir in the book “Kenton Blau – die Leipziger Tagebücher 1986-87” (English title: The Sound Behind The Wall). Current musical projects: Tirsa Perl (Reininghaus, Müller, Fischer) and The Phonehead Music club (Reininghaus). THE REAL DEAL have two songs on the Tripple Vinylbox Set “heldenstadt.anders: Der Leipziger Underground 1981-1989” (September 2019). At the Release-Festival (in UT Connewitz Leipzig, 09.14.2019) Reininghaus and Müller (accompanied by Fischer on the bass) performed again under the name THE REAL DEAL. Another REAL DEAL concert took place on 11.09.2019 as part of the OstArt-Festival in Berlin.
